Art Therapy Specialization in Movement Disorders and other Neurodegenerative Diseases

An International Initiative in collaboration with the NYU Graduate Art Therapy Program

PROGRAM GOALS

This program focuses on the training of practicing art therapists to master the theories and practice of art therapy techniques for clients with movement disorders and other neurodegenerative diseases.

The program aims at providing:
• Knowledge of pathophysiology, clinical phenomenology, functional needs and current standards of care in the field of Parkinson’s disease and related disorders.
• Ability to identify specific symptoms and challenges experienced by clients suffering from neurodegenerative disease, including motor disability, non-motor problems, cognitive changes, psychiatric comorbidities and effects of medications.
• Understanding of diagnostic and therapeutic challenges in the interactions of health professionals with patients with neurodegenerative diseases.
• Specific knowledge on art therapy practices for patients with neurodegenerative diseases and movement disorders.
• Skills to identify and assess psycho-physiological effects during the art making processes and the creations of these patient populations.
• Confidence to approach clients struggling with chronic progressive neurodegenerative conditions, and to deliver individualized art therapy treatments.

PROGRAM STRUCTURE

The training program consists of webinar lectures held over four weeks, totaling 28 hours, 7 hours a week of theoretical learning.

This training provides 28 hours of continuing education credits in New York State, US for Licensed Creative Arts Therapists through the New York University Creative Arts Therapies Consortium of the Steinhardt School of Culture, Education, & Human Development. The NYU Steinhardt School of Culture, Education & Human Development  is recognized by the New York State Education Department’s State Board for Mental Health Practitioners as an approved provider of continuing education for licensed creative arts therapies. #CAT-0062
