The Center for Parkinson’s Disease and Movement Disorders of Perugia provides diagnosis, treatment and support for patients with Parkinson’s disease and movement disorders with a multidisciplinary team of dedicated neurologists, neuropsychologists, physiatrists, specialized nurses, neuroradiologists, neurosurgeons, gastroenterologists and geneticists.
Approximately 30 movement disorders outpatient visits are scheduled every week (about 1400 visits yearly). Patients with movement disorders can be admitted in the Neurology ward (total: 21 beds) for diagnostic and therapeutic purposes, including management and treatment of complicated phases.
In cooperation with “Unione Parkinsoniani Perugia”, the Center promotes programs of physical activities, psychological training, speech and occupational therapy tailored according to the disease stage. The Center also promotes education for general practitioners, neurologists and nurses with courses and seminars open also to patients and caregivers.
Clinical and preclinical research is carried out in collaboration with national and international centers and is mainly focused on: i) diagnostic and prognostic role of CSF biomarkers, in particular alpha-synuclein; ii) seeding aggregation assays; iii) assessment of the impact of alpha-synuclein oligomers on synaptic plasticity in animal models.
